5 mistakes that hurt your conversion rate

Five common mistakes that drive visitors away, and the simple way to fix them.

A weak conversion rate rarely comes from one big problem. It usually comes from several small frictions that, added together, push the visitor to leave. The good news is that these mistakes are concrete and quick to fix, without a full rebuild or a big budget. Most of the time, it is about removing obstacles rather than adding features. Here are five to tackle first.

01 A page that takes too long to load

Speed is the first impression you leave. A visitor who waits a few seconds too long closes the tab before even seeing your offer, and will not come back. On mobile, where patience is shorter, the effect is even sharper.

The causes are almost always the same, and most fix without a rebuild. Here are the points to check first.

  • Heavy, uncompressed images
  • Too many external scripts blocking the display
  • Hosting undersized for your traffic

02 A call to action that is buried or vague

The visitor should never wonder what to do next. Yet many pages hide their main button at the bottom, surround it with competing links or use a lukewarm label like “learn more”. The result is the same: the action is not obvious, so it does not happen.

Make the action visible on the first screen, phrase it with a precise verb and give it room. A page needs one main goal, not five. When that goal is clear, the visitor naturally follows the path you have drawn. Rework the button text as well so it describes the outcome, for instance “get my quote” rather than a plain “submit”, because a visitor clicks more willingly when they know what waits on the other side.

03 A form that asks too much

Every field you add loses part of your visitors. Many forms ask for a phone number, a job title or an address that nobody needs at this stage. The prospect hesitates, feels watched, and leaves before sending.

Keep only what is essential to start the conversation, often a name and one way to reach them. You will gather the rest later, once trust is built. A short form does not attract lower-quality contacts: it simply attracts more of them. State what happens after sending as well, for instance a callback within twenty-four hours, to remove the last hesitation before the click.

04 No proof that you can be trusted

A visitor who does not know you looks for reasons to believe you. Without a testimonial, without shown work, without visible contact details, your offer stays an empty promise. Doubt alone is enough to stop them going further, even if your service is excellent.

Add simple, honest elements: a real client review, a project example, a partner logo or a physical address. You do not need to overdo it. A few credible signals, placed near the call to action, reassure at the exact moment the visitor decides. Avoid invented or exaggerated proof, though, because it is spotted quickly and lastingly damages the trust you are trying to build.

05 Fix without guessing

The fifth mistake is changing things at random. Without data, you tweak a colour or a title on a hunch and never know if it helped. A simple measurement tool shows you where visitors stop, and that is where your real gains hide.

If you would rather start from a clear point, at Fronx we offer a free audit of your main page. We follow a visitor’s path, spot frictions like the ones described here and hand you a list of concrete actions, ranked by impact. It is then yours to apply, with us or on your own.
